HealthShare Membership
A health care sharing ministry membership. Not insurance. Members pay a set monthly share and the ministry coordinates payment of eligible medical bills among members.
Who it fits
- Your household does not qualify for a marketplace subsidy
- Everyone on the membership is in generally good health
- You want a lower monthly cost and can accept a large share of routine costs yourself
- You missed open enrollment and need something that starts next month
What to know
- What it is
- A membership in a health care sharing ministry. It is not an insurance policy and is not regulated as one.
- Monthly cost
- Often a fraction of an unsubsidized marketplace premium. Varies by household size, age, and the program you choose.
- Pre-existing conditions
- Usually limited or excluded for a waiting period. Ask before you join.
- Enrollment
- Any month. There is no open enrollment window.
- Networks
- Most programs let you see any provider. Some negotiate bills after the fact.
- Guarantee
- None. Sharing is voluntary and the ministry does not guarantee payment of any bill.
How we help
- 01
We estimate your marketplace subsidy first. If a subsidized plan costs about the same, we tell you to take the plan.
- 02
We read the program guidelines with you: what is shareable, what is not, and how the waiting periods work.
- 03
If you join, we stay your contact for questions about eligibility and bill submission.
HealthShare questions
Is a HealthShare plan insurance?
No. It is a membership in a health care sharing ministry. There is no insurance contract, no state guarantee fund, and no legal obligation to pay a claim. It works for many families, but it is a different product with different rules.
Who should not join one?
Anyone who qualifies for a meaningful marketplace subsidy, anyone with an ongoing condition that would be excluded, and anyone who needs guaranteed coverage for maternity, mental health, or prescriptions. We run the comparison before you decide.
Does it satisfy the requirement to have coverage?
There is no federal penalty for going without insurance. A few states have their own mandate. We check your state on the call.
