A lower-cost alternative for healthy households that do not qualify for a subsidy.
Health care sharing ministry memberships are not insurance. Members share each other's eligible medical bills for a set monthly amount. For some families the math works. We tell you when it does not.
- Monthly cost often well below an unsubsidized plan
- No open enrollment window, join any month
- Not insurance: pre-existing conditions and some care excluded
- We compare it against a marketplace plan before you decide
HealthShare is not insurance.
A health care sharing ministry is a membership organization. Members pay a monthly share and the ministry coordinates payment of eligible medical bills among members. There is no insurance contract, no state guarantee fund, and no legal obligation to pay any bill. For many healthy households the monthly savings are real. For others a subsidized marketplace plan costs about the same and covers far more. We run that comparison before you decide.
Usually a poor fit if
- You qualify for a meaningful marketplace subsidy
- Someone in the household has an ongoing condition
- You are planning a pregnancy or need mental health or prescription coverage guaranteed
- You want a regulator to call if a bill is not paid
Marketplace plans we compare it against
Plan availability varies by county, state, and product.
HealthShare Plans questions
Do I qualify for a subsidy?
Most households do. The amount depends on your household size and income. We estimate yours before quoting so you see the real monthly cost.
I missed open enrollment. Can I still get a plan?
If you had a qualifying event in the last 60 days, yes. Otherwise short-term medical or a HealthShare membership can bridge the gap until the next window.
Is a HealthShare plan insurance?
No. It is a membership in a health care sharing ministry. It can cost far less than an unsubsidized plan, but it is not regulated as insurance and does not guarantee payment. We compare it against a marketplace plan before you decide.
