Life insurance with a health condition

Life insurance if you use oxygen, a wheelchair, or in-home care

The very first health question on most final expense applications asks about oxygen, a wheelchair, and help with daily living. A yes to any of them moves the application to guaranteed issue at most carriers. You still get coverage, through a different plan.

What carriers ask

  • Oxygen use, including at night
  • Wheelchair use, and whether it is for a temporary injury
  • Whether you receive in-home care, or live in a nursing facility or assisted living
  • Help needed with daily activities: bathing, dressing, eating, mobility

What usually qualifies

Level or graded, in narrow cases

A wheelchair used after a recent surgery or injury with recovery expected, or a walker rather than a wheelchair. Some carriers accept assisted living without a nursing-care need.

Guaranteed issue

Ongoing oxygen use, a wheelchair for a permanent condition, home health care, or a nursing home. No health questions, acceptance within the age range, two-year waiting period for natural causes, accidental death covered from day one.

Before the call

What helps your application

  1. 01

A walker is not a wheelchair. Several carriers ask specifically about wheelchairs and accept walker use at level rates.

  2. 02

Temporary help after a surgery is different from ongoing care. Tell us the reason and the expected end date.

  3. 03

Guaranteed issue face amounts top out around $25,000. If you need more, two carriers can each issue a policy.

Questions

Oxygen, wheelchair, or home care questions

Is guaranteed issue worth it with the waiting period?

For most families, yes. If death from natural causes occurs in the first two years, the premiums come back with interest, so nothing is lost. After two years the full benefit is in force for life, and premiums never rise.

Can I get more than $25,000?

By stacking policies from more than one carrier, yes. We arrange it so the applications do not conflict.
